Documentation

Meaning of left and right.

The basic meaning of left and right, due to the important symmetry observed in the human body around the central sagittal plane, is to specifically distinguish the two members of the numerous paired entities.

Symmetrical pairs have long been recognized as such in only an implicite way in the numerous representations of gross anatomy. This new presentation of TAH made symmetrical pairs explicite. They are specific sets of two members to be qualified as left and right members. On a genetic point of view, the members of a symmetrical pair are issued of a unique gene expression.

In addition, for historical reasons, left and right may be used in order to distinguish similar terms of a pair according to their relative position like left and right atrium. However this practice is missleading and not recommended.
